This course is offered at many private and government institutions. This discipline deals with physiology, anatomy and diseases of the eye. The term opthalmology is derived from the Greek words ophthalmos meaning “eyes” and “logia” means study of course. Even in 800 BC, the Indian surgeon Sushruta wrote about eye diseases and surgical techniques and the instruments used. So, it is a course having a long history. Eligibility! Students after completing their higher secondary with science stream can take up this course. The students should have studied biology, physics and chemistry in their higher secondary course. There is no single common entrance exam for the course as such as many institutes consider the marks in the qualifying exam and in some institutes the scores of some state conducted entrance exams are taken in for selection to the Bsc ophthalmology course. The duration of the course varies with institutes but all courses have mandatory internships. These graduates are trained to assist doctors in detecting the diseases and they also assist them during surgery. They learn about diseases and defects occurring in the eye and their corrective procedures. They prescribe glasses and lens and they consult the patients first and offer their reports to the doctors with their findings. The classroom and practical training provide them valuable insight into ophthalmology through bsc. Curriculum! Some of the subjects of the course are human anatomy and physiology, ocular anatomy, pathology and microbiology, optics, biochemistry, clinical pathology and microbiology, lens grinding and fitting, pharmacy, refraction, clinical and advanced optics and orthoptics, clinical refraction and contact lens, management of O.T, assistance in clinical ophthalmology, etc. Skills Required! The students need to be observant and patient. They should be able to deal with different kinds of patients and they should be good at communication too. Placements! They are hired as ophthalmic assistant, ophthalmic technician, clinical supervisors, etc. They could also start their own business or showrooms. Their initial salary is about 9 lakhs per annum and it differs with location and these professionals get good placements overseas.
